I set up my pottery in Pine Bush, New York in 2007. Since then, I have met several wood-fire potters in the area. I now collaborate with these potters and fire my pots primarily in two different styles of kilns.
The wood fire kiln is a combination Noborigama/Anagama kiln owned by kiln master Tony Moore. It is located on top of a hill in Cold Spring, New York. It reaches a temperature of approximately 2350 degrees Fahrenheit in a firing that takes four full days and nights. It is a labor-intensive process that requires the work of many hands. After the kiln reaches its highest temperature, it is held at that temperature for up to two days. Then it is cooled slowly for two weeks before it is opened to reveal the hundreds of pots placed neatly within. As this kiln is unloaded--again a cooperative effort--the pots leave the darkness of the kiln and enter the light. Their placement in the kiln, and the action of the flames, smoke, and ash produces pottery of exceptional beauty. It’s a special joy to see your pottery, and the pottery of others, as pots are handled and examined by everyone who takes part in the firing of this kiln.
The kiln at New Prospect Pottery is a downdraft gas kiln. It was built in 2010. It fires beautifully, trapping carbon and kissing the pots with magic.
I use a different clay body in each to enhance the surface quality that each kiln brings to the finished ware. I love the different looks produced by both types of kilns.
